About the Artwork

One of a pair of large candelabra, this exemplifies the exquisite refinement and technical virtuosity of the neoclassical period in France. Borrowing heavily from ancient models, the designer combined female caryatids, flame finials, acanthus leaves, and classical ornament into highly finished sculptural masterpieces.
The candelabra closely resemble a set of four designed around 1775 by the prominent neoclassical architect and draftsman Charles-Louis Clérisseau for the salon of the Paris residence of the financier and collector Grimod de la Reynière. Architects in the eighteenth century frequently provided designs for interiors, especially the carved paneling, mantelpieces, furniture, and lighting; these, in turn, were created by specialized craftsmen in various guilds.

 Accession Number

This unique number is assigned to an individual artwork as part of the cataloguing process at the time of entry into the permanent collection.
Most frequently, accession numbers begin with the year in which the artwork entered the museum’s holdings.
For example, 2008.3 refers to the year of acquisition and notes that it was the 3rd of that year. The DIA has a few additional systems—no longer assigned—that identify specific donors or museum patronage groups.
